How to Open an M3U Playlist in VLC Media Player
VLC can open local playlist files and authorized network playlist URLs. It is a general media player and does not supply media access.
Download VLC only from VideoLAN’s official website or an official store listing linked by VideoLAN.
Open a remote playlist
- Start VLC and choose Media → Open Network Stream on Windows or File → Open Network on macOS.
- Paste the authorized playlist URL exactly as supplied.
- Select Play and allow VLC to load the playlist.
- Open the playlist view to select an available item.
Open a local M3U file
- Save the file in a private folder.
- Use Media → Open File or drag the file into VLC.
- Do not upload the file to public malware scanners or support forums if it contains private URLs or credentials.
When a playlist does not load
- Confirm the URL has not been wrapped across lines or changed by a messaging application.
- Check the system clock and whether the URL opens only from an authorized network.
- Update VLC, restart it and retest.
- VLC’s program-guide behavior differs from dedicated television players; an empty guide does not always mean the playlist is unavailable.
